July 9, 2018
Dear Parents and Students:
On behalf of the Board of Directors, friars, faculty and staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you back to St. Francis for the 2018-2019 school year.  We hope you enjoyed your summer and are prepared for an exciting school year. Attached to this mailing you will find links to everything you need for the opening of school; they have also been posted to the school website.
St. Francis High School’s policies and official school calendar are published annually in the Parent/Student Handbook, and distributed to each student on the first day of school. The handbook will also be posted on our website; the 2018-19 academic calendar is already posted there.  Athletic schedules can be found on the website. Additional copies of the handbook will be available in the school office upon request during business hours and/or Back to School Day.  We ask that parents review the handbook and calendar and check updates by visiting our website (and by reading our monthly newsletter) during the school year.  It is a condition of enrollment that families review this publication regarding all policies and consequences for infractions.  The Student Directory will be printed and available after Labor Day.
PLEASE NOTE: Because of our early start, this mailing is occurring before some students have completed outstanding summer school requirements.  We remind parents and students that we can rescind a student’s admission if he fails to complete his requirements or if his grades are not satisfactory.
To access your son’s schedule, please do the following: Log into Plus Portals; Click on Student’s E-Locker; Click on student’s E-Portfolio; you will see the student’s schedule there under documents.
A.    First day of classes-The first day of class for all students will be on Thursday, August 16.  Classes begin at 8:05 a.m.,              and dismissal time varies dependent upon a student’s grade level.
B.     School Pictures/Mass Dress Day-On Thursday, August 23, we will take yearbook and ID photos.  Mass dress code                 (shirt, tie, slacks) is in effect!  More information will be distributed to your son in homeroom.
C.     Fall Pride Day-On Saturday, August 11, our Booster Club will hold its annual Fall Pride Day to assist the Athletic                   Department in preparing for the upcoming season.
D.     Back to School Sunday-On Sunday, September 9, we will host Back to School Day.  This will give parents the chance           to meet their son’s teachers who will inform them of their educational philosophies and expectations.  At 12:00 noon,             a general Orientation Meeting will occur in the gym.  Beginning at 1:00 p.m., each class will meet for ten minutes,                 with a five-minute passing period between classes. The final class is scheduled to end at 2:45 p.m.  We will conclude             the day with an optional Mass at 3:15 p.m. in the chapel. We ask parents to bring a copy of their son’s schedule                 with them that day.
A.     Parent Plus Portals- if you have had any changes in emergency contacts (address, home/cell phone, or email                 address) since registration or re-registration, please update them!  It is very important for families to input this           information because this will be the method of contacting you in case of a campus emergency. Parents may                     choose which (or all) way(s) to become notified by completing the prompts.
 B.    We would like to express our appreciation to Director of Operations, Mr. Frank Nevaril and his maintenance staff for             directing the numerous projects that occurred on our campus the last several months.
C.     Please note on our book list that a limited number of textbooks may be available in e-book form; however, many are               not at this time.  Please note the special column and notes on the booklist indicating which books are available in                   ebook form.  Some will be provided from our instructors at no cost.  Please note that should you purchase books from           a source other than our official bookstore, that St. Francis is not responsible for problems you may encounter.
D.     We are pleased to welcome to the St. Francis faculty:  Mr. Timothy Anderson (Mathematics), Ms. Anna Clipperton                 (Foreign Language), Mr. Sergio Diaz (Foreign Language), and welcome Fr. Christopher Iwancio (Campus Chaplain)             back to SF. We know that you will help our new staff members, transfer students, and the freshman class, to make a               smooth transition to St. Francis!
E.     We remind students and parents to review all the dates for quarter and semester exams and especially NOT TO                       schedule vacations during the time we take first semester examinations (December 17-19).
F.      Special Schedules:  The last Thursday of most months, will be designated a Friday Schedule. On those days, juniors               and seniors will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. and freshmen and sophomores at 2:04 p.m.  This will allow our academic               departments the necessary time to work on faculty curricular concerns and technology projects.
G.     Please note that our first Parent/Teacher Conferences of the year (September 19) will occur from 3-9 p.m. to provide             more access for our parents.  These meetings are not mandatory, although they are recommended for students                     experiencing academic difficulty.  The final conference of the year (May 8) will be shortened by one hour-on that               evening appointments will be available from 6-8 p.m. only.
H.     Just a reminder that summer reading exams will be held in English classes (and some AP courses) and projects for                 certain classes will be due the first week of school.  Specifics were posted on the school website all summer. Students           who do poorly on summer reading risk being removed from Honors/AP courses.
I.     There is a new policy regarding the wearing and use of headphones during the school day.  The reason for this addition          is that the use of headphones has become a distraction to the educational process.  It will be explained to students at              Orientation and the policy will be printed in the Student Handbook as well.
Campus traffic is always an issue during the first few weeks of the school year.  This issue has been complicated by ongoing construction on the 210 Freeway.  There are times when on-ramps and off-ramps needed for school access will be closed.  Please consider that when determining the time you leave home.  When dropping off students at school, we ask that parents wait until they are outside the parking structure and adjacent to the gym before letting students out of their cars.  You might also consider dropping off students at St. Bede’s Church and having the crossing guard walk them across Foothill Blvd.  When picking up students, we expect parents to move into an available parking space rather than waiting in the driveway. This will help the traffic flow.  We would especially like to remind parents that the entry plaza in front of the Administration Building/Performing Arts Center should not be used for student drop-off and pick-up.  It lacks the necessary area to accommodate the number of cars we have at those peak times, and the area adjacent to the parking structure is much safer for entering and exiting vehicles. As you travel through the neighborhoods near the school, we ask you to be respectful of our neighbors.
Finally, it is our expectation that you participate in your son’s education by maintaining contact with us and utilizing the existing channels of communication listed in the handbook.  Please take the time to review school policies and the important calendar dates, and be aware of updates that occur via email in our monthly newsletter.  We hope you find meaningful ways to be involved and that you encourage your son to take advantage of all that St. Francis High School offers.  Our entire staff looks forward to working with you in enriching your son’s mind and heart.
Thomas G. Moran
